The Different Impressionism of Camille Pissarro. Barberini meets Kupferstichkabinett
To mark the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, the Museum Barberini is showing a selection of prints by Camille Pissarro from September 14, 2024 to January 12, 2025. The presentation of 26 graphic sheets from the Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin aims to build on the exhibition A Different Impressionism. International Printmaking from Manet to Whistler, which is taking place at the same time in the Kupferstichkabinett. The Different Impressionism is dedicated to the diverse effects of light and shadow in the medium of printmaking on the basis of 110 works, including numerous never or rarely shown works by artists such as Édouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, James Whistler and Lesser Ury.
Camille Pissarro also left behind an important oeuvre of prints that paved the way for the innovations of Impressionism. He learned the technical skills of the printing process and experimented in it as vividly as in his painting. The artist worked with etching, drypoint, aquatint, lithography and monotype to explore the potential of each medium. Together with Cézanne, Guillaumin and Gachet, Pissarro explored the diverse possibilities of this medium. Pissarro's prints often served as inspiration for his paintings, which shows their special significance in the artist's oeuvre. With Camille Pissarro, an outsider became a key figure for the Impressionists. Born in the Caribbean, the artist came to France in 1855, sensed the anti-academic upsurge in painting and attracted like-minded people. With their revolutionary painting style, they founded Impressionism.
In front of the originals, Dr. Ortrud Westheider, Director of the Museum Barberini, and Dr. Anna Marie Pfäfflin, curator of 19th century art at the Kupferstichkabinett and curator of the exhibition A Different Impressionism, will discuss the Impressionist characteristics and innovative techniques of Pissarro's graphic oeuvre. The event also announces the major retrospective The Honest Eye: Camille Pissarro's Impressionism, which will be on display at the Museum Barberini next year from June 14 to September 28, 2025.
