Ulrich Matthes Reads
Up to his death in 1890 Van Gogh wrote over nine hundred letters, most of them to his brother, Theo, with whom he was very close. They provide direct insight into the development of this exceptional artist and document his struggles with paint, technique, and subject matter. Van Gogh’s letters are valuable sources for understanding his artistic evolution, deeply human testimonials, and great literature. The German actor Ulrich Matthes read a selection of letters at the Museum Barberini in conjunction with the Van Gogh exhibition in 2019.
