Located in the center of Potsdam, the state capital of Brandenburg, the Museum Barberini does not only offer encounters with art. Set in the midst of a historic cultural and natural landscape, the museum on the old market square, Alter Markt, is an ideal place to begin exploring the area by foot.
Neighborhood and Surroundings
Potsdam is full of sights and history: as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former royal residence, a legendary city of films, the historic location of the Potsdam Conference after World War II, the place where spies were exchanged between East and West, the capital of Brandenburg, and a center of scholarship. Most important of all are the palaces and gardens of the Prussian kings including Sanssouci and Neues Palais, the historic center with its Baroque squares, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Dutch Quarter or Holländisches Viertel with its characteristic gabled houses, all of which are surrounded by the idyllic lakes of the Havel.
City Walking Tours
Italy, France and Holland in Potsdam - three audio tours of the free Barberini app take you out of the museum and across the city. Accompanied by the voice of Günther Jauch, discover the many buildings and works of art in Potsdam that were created in the 18th and 19th centuries based on Italian models. Learn more about the French influences and connections that have helped shape the city over the centuries. Or be surprised by the numerous Dutch references in Brandenburg's state capital. The city tours are also available as a printed guide in the museum store.
Digital Audio Tour “Art on the River”
This open-air gallery is also known as the “Walk of Modern Art” and stretches approx. 2 km from the Alter Markt along the banks of the Havel to the Schiffbauergasse International Art and Culture Quarter and on to the Glienicke Bridge. It combines objects, sculptures and sculptures on the theme of “Path, Water, Landscape”. The “Potsdam City Guide” app has an audio guide that accompanies you on the tour. Among other things, you will receive background information on the art objects and the respective artists. In the audio guide tour, we recommend combining the tour with an art museum along the route. These include the Museum Barberini on the Alter Markt, the museum FLUXUS+ and the KUNSTRAUM on the Schiffbauergasse site and the Villa Schöningen on the Glienicker Brücke.
Experience how history is intertwined with art and culture, and discover the many cafés, restaurants, and small shops in Potsdam. We recommend the following for excursions in the surroundings:
